Not much of a technical video to be honest . Virgin offer also offer XGSPON , whereas BT on FTTP only offer GPON ! Also to note virgins DOCSIS HFC suffer from Ingress/Egress depending how much rf noise your areas suffers from. Also you never mentioned ADSL which alot of people are on and there is legacy packages ip stream .. and LLU which will be even slower due to line profiling.

Had to go with a 4G router here as the copper cable to my house is awful and can't get more than 18-20 Mbps on a good day. 4G is great and get 50-80 BUT at rush hour it can tank to under 10 and sometimes doesn't recover and I have to restart the router. Would not recommend if you get half decent FTTC speeds. FTTP is being laid in my area and I cannot wait to finally have a decent internet connection.

I'm in the planning stages of doing something like this. I don't mind spending a few bucks more. Is something like the WS2811 COB strip and the power handling complications worth the squeeze? Is it better? Is so is it only marginal, or is it more significant?

I discovered that Virgin Media now have 3 tiers of cancellation line, each with higher discounts, in order to reach the next tier you must INSIST on cancelling your service. - Tier 1 will offer you about 5-10% discount Seems to be overseas staff, and I might have been unlucky but my call was with a very hardball, take it or leave it, negotiation style for what was actually a really bad offer. This felt quite rude over the phone. But I insisted on cancelling after being shown that my money was less valuable than new customers' money. - Tier 2 will offer you about 10-20% discount (local helpful staff) Actually quite nice people who genuinely wanted to help, but I was still angry with the tier 1 rep so I insisted on leaving. - Tier 3 will offer you about 30-40% discount (local helpful staff) Access to tier 3 is only possible when you actually cancel, they will call you days, maybe weeks later to make an offer to try and keep you. I felt quite angry when I discovered this was how Virgin treat loyal customers so I switched to BT after 14 years. Turns out BT have a "so you're angry with Virgin 1600mbs package") PS: Do NOT throw away your tracking receipt when you return your kit. They seem to either accidently or on purpose "lose it" unless you can prove it was returned. Hope this helps some people.

this router came out with too many bugs. My 5ghz devices wouldn't work unless the 160hz is turned off. Kept dropping wireless connections, then it died, red link light now stays on. I put my Rapture GT-AX 11000 back, and now it is working fine. I won't buy Asus routers until they fix these problems. My old router works fine with 160hz on and I'm not losing connections. I sent it back for a refund. all this happened in just 2 weeks

EE is dreadful.....overpriced, slow, and a terrible support system. I'd been with TalkTalk for nearly eleven years, and stupidly decided to try EE last year. After only three months, I went back to TalkTalk. Anything to do with BT is a big no-no to me, and I'll also be able to keep my landline phone indefinitely with TT, whereas EE is phasing it out.

You are wrong on the FTTC angle with netflix! 3 streams at the same time on 4k is fine! Of course you assume the 15MB bitrate (streaming 4k is rubbish compared to 4k blu ray but I digress). What about OTHER thing like phones, tablets etc. Also, if using ETHERNET is fine but wifi is a hog. Fact is FTTC is no longer fit for purpose. FTTP should be the way forward everywhere. I have FTTP with sky at gigabit and it is great.

hay dude, interesting video. ive been on full fibre for 4 years now and was on vodafone 900 mb up n down. check my xbox speed all the time and my MTU was always 1480, but i recently, left vodafone and went to yayzi. but the change over was messy, the city fibre guys hat came to check he line were here for over an hour and said the ont was bouncing my signal. odd because i was using it just fine a couple of hours earlier before vodafone cut it. the cityfibre guys ended up changing the ONT and just said its ok now, cya later. not even bothering to check the router. i get my xbox on and do a speed test and now the MTU is showing 1320 and this is too low for xbox to run properly. so been back n forth with yayzi and they kept saying it must be the xbox etc which it isnt. they said their setting for the MTU on the routers are set at 1500. then they did some checks and nothing changed. i decided to buy my own asus £220 router, still same MTU on xbox. do you have any idea what would be restricting the MTU to the xbox? im thinking the ONT is faulty as now the last light on it does a constant slow blink, where as before it used to be pretty much on solid, with a slight flicker. yayzi still not fixed this and i havent payed them any money yet. 2 months so far. thanks. 🙂

To be clear that's a 3.3% difference for the 10 Gb file download test from Dropbox, and you might consider that those slow download speeds are more something to do with Dropbox (specifically your account type and how you are using it)... for a thorough test you'd probably need to have a statistically significant sample of download speed/time measurements. That 3.3% is in the range of expected error and I'd guess that these results are effectively the same. PS the Google Drive download difference was ~6% which could be considered more significant, but I'll bet many wouldn't even have noticed that difference in a side by side comparison unless they were paying close attention ;)

If there is anything that I regret, it must be coming to the UK to study abroad, because I am used to China's national coverage signal, in contrast, the signal of the UK is ten times worse than that of China, and with the weather, the signal disappears in stages. It can be seen from this that the UK is the poorest developed country in the world, so if I could do it over again, I would not go to the UK to study.

There are so many issues buried under this analysis. The video exposed the impact of how ISPs interconnect and peer their services that is shown by differences in speed to specific services. Indeed, you may not be connecting to those services at the same point either. Time of day has a big impact on responsiveness of internet services and networks. What you don't see is the backhaul to an ISPs presence in addition to their peering arrangements. That will be dimensioned (and hence costed) to meet a forecast load. Virgin will all be on it's own infrastructure so under their direct control. With the exception of the other ISPs mentioned (and possibly even those) the other ISPs backhaul will likely be over BT MPLS. Then of course there is the impact of the hardware serving a particular connection or connection path. Older routers in street cabs will likely be less capable than newer ones. But, if you are on fibre you have good reason to expect that all the local loop is also fibre and the shared links are faster than your own access connection. The internet is an incredibly complex machine. It is difficult to make direct comparisons because there are so many variables. Others may likely get completely different responses. Finally, you really have to be going some to load fast connections. You will really struggle to get 4 stable 4k downloads over an 80M service. Typically you will be seeing 17-18Mbit/s for each stream (depending on encoding). Then you have the link overhead and router performance considerations. It is a walk in the park for 200Mbit/s and greater though. Ping is important for gaming which is why that metric is shown (not a gamer myself and two heavy gamers have now left home). I dare say though that the games insert some equalisation on that measure to make things fairer but am sure they won't acknowledge that. Outright speed is an overrated metric. It only tells you so much. It is only really important to certain businesses such as banking/trading where they use dedicated fibres with minimal repeaters in order to reduce latency. And, they will only use their own networking equipment. That is a different ballgame altogether.

I've come to the exact conclusion that 50/60 mbs is the sweetspot speed. As Virgin upgraded my service - and charged me more per month - once above 60 mbs the downloads didn't seen to improve that much, but it was costme more without any obvious benefits. What would be better is a symmetrical download/upload speed for sending large images or files. After that you are at the mercy of the server to which you are trying to connect and download.

I have been on VM 1gig since it launched. The limited upload can be an issue for me. But I want the ability to download large files, games, patches etc as quick as possible. I pay £48 but I am leaving for Yayzi (City Fibre) to get a 2.3Gbps down and 1Gbps with a 2Gbps upload in the future for £50. Thats bonkers! Ping for me has always been ok. around 20ms 99% of the time. I am the only person here so I dont have to worry about my connection getting hammered by someone else and giving me a shitty ping ;) I am looking forward to getting off of DOCSIS and on to FTTP for the better ping times.

Sadly I’m out in the sticks and awful cellular coverage so it’s got to be StarLink. It’s pricey to start with, pricey pm and you HAVE to have a good MESH system as the router’s WiFi is truly awful. But it’s good speeds with up to 400mb off peak. The ping isn’t great but it is improving. Of course as you said it does fluctuate a lot due to the moving satellites of course and the speed too. But as a family we simply cannot settle for 21mb which is the best we can get from Openreach. So StarLink is a lifesaver. While love our location, im insanely jealous of FTTP.

I don't get openreach and BT... they have always come out years late to the game and release a product thats slower than the competition. They were releasing 50-60mbps when virgin media was already at 100mbps+. Virgin already had gigabit fibre when Openreach started releasing 800mbps and virgin seem to have better coverage for ultra fast fibre. Openreach 800mbps isn't even in my area yet and virgin media has already released 2gbps. The best I can get from openreach is the old 60mbps connection.
